HOW IT WORKS

How should I use WE-cycle?
WE-cycles are for transit: short, frequent, point-to-point trips between bus stops, businesses, restaurants, events, lodges, and residences.

How long can I take a bike out?
You can take a bike out for as long as you need it. Just remember you will start accruing Overtime Fees for each checkout over 30 minutes. We suggest keeping your checkouts to less than 30 minutes to avoid additional fees. Your pass allows for unlimited checkouts while it's valid.  The clock resets when your bike redocks.

What do you mean by “Overtime Fees”?
Overtime Fees are charged if you keep a bike out for longer than 30 minutes. The first 30 minutes of each checkout is included in the cost of your pass; you will owe $4 for the first half hour after 30 minutes, and $8 for each subsequent half hour after 60 minutes. So if you keep a bike checked out for an hour, you will be charged an additional $4 on top of your pass price; an hour and a half checkout will run you $12 extra, a 2-hour checkout will be $20.  If you keep the bike out all day, you will be charged an extra $124.

If I purchase a 24-hour pass, can I keep the same bike for 24 hours?
No!  You are meant to take the bike for 30-minutes at a time during that 24-hour period.  If you keep the bike for a full 24-hours without checking it in, you will rack an Overtime Fees charge of $124.

What if there are no empty docks when I want to return my bike?
If there are no empty docks, insert your key, Direct-to-bike pass or credit card and select the TIME CREDIT option on the kiosk screen. This will allow you an extra 15 minutes to take your bike to another station. If you are at a station that isn’t near any others, give us a call and we can help you out: 970.205.9222.

What do I do if there are no bikes available at my station?
If there are no bikes at a station, it means that the WE-cycle system is out of balance, and our Operations Team is working hard to get bikes redistributed. You will have to get a bike from a nearby station.  Insider tip: check out the Transit App for iPhone/for Android for real-time bike and dock availability.

 

SIGNING UP

Is there a security deposit when I sign up?

There isn’t a security deposit when you sign up, but a credit card is required (regardless of what type of pass you get) in the event that you damage the bike and/or keep it for longer than 30 minutes at a time.

Can I lend my pass to someone else?
For liability reasons, your pass is non-transferable. WE-cycle does, however, offer some great packages to businesses and organizations that want to buy passes in bulk.

How many bikes can I take out with my pass/credit card?
You can check out up to two bikes using the same credit card at the station kiosk provided you select a 2-bike option initially.  If you purchase a pass online, the same credit card can be used to purchase as many passes as you would like.

How do I become a season passholder?
Simply click the Sign Up button and follow the instructions.

Are the first 30 minutes always included in the cost of my pass?
Yes, the first 30 minutes of each checkout are always included in the cost of your pass

I only want to use WE-cycle from time to time, can I use it without getting a pass? 

You will need to get a pass in order to use the system. There is, however, an option to get a 24-hour, 3-day, or 7-day pass if you don’t want to commit to a season pass. Just walk up to the kiosk, insert your credit card, select your pass type and use the provided ride code to check out a bike. To ride again, insert your credit card and you will receive another ride code.

Riders can also purchase a pass using Transit App: select purchase a pass and follow the steps. 

How will I be billed for my Overtime Fees?
If you are a season passholder, you will be billed for Overtime Fees once per month. 24-hour, 3-day, 7-day, and 30-day passholders will be billed upon the expiration of their pass. The credit card you originally submitted will be automatically charged at that time.

I subscribed online, can I use the service right away?
Yes! Download Transit App, login into the system, and start riding right away. If you prefer to wait for a phsyical key, you will receive your key in the mail in a few days (or arrange to come pick it up at the WE-cycle office). 

Is it possible to become a passholder if I don’t have a credit card?
If you would like to use the program as a season passholder but don’t have a credit card, contact us about our sponsor account program: 970.205.9222.

 

HOW TO RIDE

How do I take a bike out of a dock?

Insert your season pass key or Direct-to-bike access card into the dock or type the unlocking code on the dock’s key pad. When the light on the dock turns green, lift the bike seat and firmly pull backward on the bike to slide it out of the dock.

How do I return a bike?
Push the front wheel of the bike firmly into the dock.  The green light indicates that the bike is docked and properly locked. If the red light on the bike dock stays on, remove the bike and try another empty bike dock.  Insider tip: place your foot on the pedal and push the bike into the dock with your foot.

I’ve returned my bike, how do I take another ride?
Riders with a WE-cycle season pass key or Direct-to-bike access card need to insert it into the dock. If you purchased a 24-hour, 3-day, or 7-day pass at the station kiosk, press RIDE AGAIN swipe your credit card at the kiosk to get a new unlocking code. The kiosk will recognize your credit card and won’t charge you again.

Am I required to wear a helmet?
Neither the City of Aspen nor the Town of Basalt requires helmet use, though WE-cycle highly recommends wearing a helmet.  Stop by a local bike rental shop for a helmet rental.  

How much weight can a WE-cycle bike carry?
The bike can hold 265 lbs., and the basket can hold 18 lbs.

Why are the bikes so heavy?
WE-cycle bikes are built to withstand a lot of use.  The sturdy aluminum frame, puncture-resistant tires, and fully covered components keep the bikes on the street and out of the shop.  These features make the bike heavy.

 

TROUBLESHOOTING

My WE-cycle bike has been lost or stolen. What happens now?

As the user, you are responsible for the bike, and its full cost in the event that it is not recovered. WE-cycle will do its best to help you retrieve the bike.  You should call us 970.205.9222 as soon as possible and file a police report if necessary. To prevent a WE-cycle from being stolen, use the built-in lock on the bike.

My WE-cycle pass doesn’t work. What do I do?
Call WE-cycle Support 970.205.9222 and we will be able to look into it for you.

I’ve had an accident involving my WE-cycle bike. What do I do?
If someone is hurt, call 911 immediately.  Once an emergency is being handled by medical professionals, or if there is no emergency, report the accident to us 970.205.9222.  We will want to check over the bike to make sure it's fit to be ridden so no one else will get hurt.

What is WE-cycle?

WE-cycle is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community bike sharing program. WE-cycle seeks to transform the Roaring Fork Valley's landscape into one that prioritizes bicycles over vehicles, replaces traffic congestion with vibrancy, improves our visitor experience and retention and demonstrates innovation and leadership. WE-cycle is a proven solution. Small resort towns and cities around the world have turned to community bike sharing as a solution to their traffic congestion, environment and health challenges.

Why WE-cycle?
WE-cycle complements existing transit. WE-cycle strengthens the Roaring Fork Valley's existing transportation system by allowing residents and visitors to use bikes instead of cars to access the bus, run errands, or simply move about town.

How many locations does WE-cycle have?
WE-cycle is growing! It currently has 20 stations throughout Aspen and 23 stations throughout greater Basalt.

How many bikes are available for use?
WE-cycle's Aspen System has 100 bikes. WE-cycle's Basalt System has 80.

How do I get a station in my neighborhood?
WE-cycle is always interested in hearing from you. Please send requested station location details to info@we-cycle.org.

Who owns WE-cycle?
WE-cycle is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Aspen, Colorado.

Is WE-cycle a year-round service?
WE-cycle bikes and stations operate from May to October. During snowy months bikes and stations are removed and stored. However, WE-cycle is exploring the feasibility of year-round service. Stay tuned.

Where else can I ride WE-cycle in the Roaring Fork Valley?
WE-cycle's vision is to be a feeder and supplement to RFTA service throughout the valley. Our goal is to develop a hub-and-spoke style system centered around popular BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) stations in the Roaring Fork Valley.

How can I support WE-cycle?
Please donate. WE-cycle is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Even small donations make a big difference. WE-cycle is a public/private partnership. We look to engage all aspects of the community to make bike sharing a success in our community.

Is the program successful?
Yes! WE-cycle has been very successful. The number of rides has tripled in four years of operation.
